Travellers’ role on sustainable travel

The tourism industry is by nature fastest growing industry on a global scale. The industry has been suggested by the World Bank Group as an industry that can also be used to resolve some of global challenges, such as sustainable economic growth, environmental protection and climate, social inclusiveness and many more. However, the industry has also been criticised of its negative impacts.

In response, travellers are determined to travel sustainably. According to Booking.com, most people who travel want to do so in a more environmentally friendly way. Thus, over the next 12 months, almost 76% of 33,000 travellers respondents worldwide aim to travel sustainably, (Booking.com, 2023, cited in World Economic Forum, 2023). Currently, 83% respondents aim to travel sustainably, according to booking.com (2024) sustainable travel report. What prevents travellers from achieving sustainable travel in their everyday travels?

Travellers take from the Podcast on sustainable travel.

Travelling sustainably simply means maximizing the beneficial economic, social, and cultural effects of tourism while reducing adverse effects on the environment and nearby communities. It involves making thoughtful decisions that protect the environment, encourage ethical travel, and guarantee that travel benefits the earth and its inhabitants.

How can travellers continue to travel sustainably despite financial difficulties?

-        Travelling sustainably can indeed be restricted by finances but it’s not always the case. There are different options of transportation modes like trains for example to be considered if you can’t manage your preference with your financial budget to travel sustainable.

-        Travel online: instead of travelling physically, have you considered online travel? Travelling online simply means replacing your physical travel with an online activity to achieve the same results. For example, instead of travelling by plane from UK to Amsterdam for a team meeting, why not use online to do that meeting?

-        Social and leisure travel: obviously in some instances, social and leisure travel cannot be replaced with online travel, but with online travel search. Online travel search is simply searching for destinations online to travel sustainable based on your budget. Lots of travel platforms can now help you filter your search from low to high prices rates destinations.

Travellers take from the podcast on over tourism.

Over tourism happens when a destination receives more tourists than it can sustainably handle, which has detrimental effects like crowding, environmental damage, overburdened infrastructure, a worse standard of living for locals, and a worse experience for tourists.

Your visit to a particular destination is not an issue when it comes to the benefit of your visit. But look at it from other side as well, your time spent in a particular destination increases the standard pressure at a fraction. For example, pressure on accommodation, transportations, environment etc. This means the more the people, the higher the pressure for local people. Another factor of sustainable travel is addressing over tourism. There are several ways to address over tourism by travellers:

·        Consider visiting other state, city or town of your own country for a holiday instead of going abroad.

·        Do your research online or ask your travel agent to visit destinations with no over tourism issues.

Travellers take from the podcast on regenerative tourism.

One common definition of regenerative tourism is the habit of leaving places in a better condition than when you arrived. It is influenced by regenerative agriculture, which prioritizes biodiversity enhancement and ecological restoration.

Travellers can play lots of role in achieving regenerative tourism. For examples:

-        Don’t live waste on streets, forests, beach etc. but think about the environment and wellbeing of others.

-        Show some respect by obeying culture, laws, and rules.

-        Think about how your positive contributions can benefit others and help if you can.

-        Tourism fee, just pay to visit. Move away peacefully without any conflict.

Don’t forget, sustainable travel also means sustainable future. Think about tomorrow through today.
